Architect Bartolomeo Francesco Rastrelli began construction on the Winter Palace in 1754 for Empress Elizabeth Petrovna. The Hermitage complex now contains the Winter Palace, the Great (Old) Hermitage, the New Hermitage, the Small Hermitage, the Hermitage Theater, the Menshikov Palace, and the General Staff Building. The Hermitage contains 3 million works of art and world culture artifacts including: paintings, graphic works, sculptures, works of applied art, archaeological artifacts and numismatic objects.
An exhibit of pre-1400 artwork from Hlewlai. The exhibit will be on display for 18 months. Included among the art and artifacts are: the Scepter of Lomchi, portraits of twelve emperors who comprise the pre-modern age of Hlewlai, a painting entitled Star of the East, and a tablet inscribed with the work of eleventh century philosopher Wu Tam.
